URL

What's a URL?

URL is an abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator, and it represents a standardized way of specifying the addresses of web pages, files, newsgroups, and even email users. (Technically, the term is now URI, for Uniform Resource Identifier, but Hello wURLd was already named before that change took effect, so what can you do...)

The first part of a URL identifies what kind of address it specifies. Most web page addresses begin with "http:"

Other common address types are:

https:

Secure web page

ftp:

File Transfer Protocol

mailto:

email address
